09/11/21 Briefing

The S&P 500 futures trade roughly in-line with fair value as the market holds steady following yesterday's record-setting session. The S&P 500 has closed at a record high for eight straight sessions.

There aren't any specific news drivers this morning, but a report from Bloomberg indicating that President Biden interviewed Lael Brainard for Fed Chair has stirred up some conversations. Fed Chair Powell is still seen as the favorite, even as the White House reportedly told some Senate Banking Committee members that he might not get reappointed.

At the individual stock level, NVIDIA (NVDA 325.90, +17.80, +5.8%) is up nearly 6.0% following some pleasing updates out of the GPU Technical Conference, PayPal (PYPL 218.11, -11.31, -4.9%) is down 5% following its earnings report, and General Electric (GE 116.10, +7.68, +7.1%) is up 7% after announcing plans to form three public companies.

On the data front, investors will receive the Producer Price Index for October (Briefing.comconsensus 0.6%) at 8:30 a.m. ET. Earlier, the NFIB Small Business Optimism Index for October decreased to 98.2 from 99.1 in September.

U.S. Treasury yields have edged lower across the curve amid increased demand. The 2-yr yield is down three basis points to 0.42%, and the 10-yr yield is down three basis points to 1.46%. The U.S. Dollar Index is unchanged at 94.05. WTI crude futures are up 0.5% to $82.33/bbl.

  • PayPal (PYPL 218.11, -11.31): -4.9% after missing revenue estimates and lowering its FY21 guidance. The company is teaming up with Amazon.com (AMZN 3507.94, +18.96, +0.5%) to enable customers in the U.S. to pay with Venmo at checkout.

  • General Electric (GE 116.10, +7.68): +7.1% after announcing plans to form three public companies focused on growth sectors of aviation, healthcare, and energy.

  • Palantir Technologies (PLTR 25.90, -0.85): -3.2% despite beating revenue estimates and guiding Q4 revenue above consensus.

  • Five9 (FIVN 158.50, +13.25): +9.1% after beating top and bottom-line estimates and issuing upside Q4 guidance.
